Voltage basics for beginners

Voltage (electric potential) is a way to describe how strongly charges are pushed through a circuit. A battery label that says 12 volts means there is a fixed "pressure" difference between its terminals compared to a common reference—not how much energy is stored by itself, but how it can drive current when connected to a load.

Millivolts and microvolts are smaller steps of the same idea. Sensor outputs, thermocouples, and audio line levels are often tiny fractions of a volt, so datasheets use these prefixes instead of long decimals.

Kilovolts and megavolts appear in power transmission, large motors, and high-voltage equipment. The math is the same as converting meters to millimeters: you move the decimal place using powers of ten, which this tool does for you.

Supported Unit Categories:

  • SI Units: Volt (V), Millivolt (mV), Microvolt (μV), Nanovolt (nV), Picovolt (pV)
  • Practical Units: Kilovolt (kV), Megavolt (MV), Gigavolt (GV)
  • CGS Units: Statvolt (statV), Abvolt (abV)
  • Engineering Units: Peak Voltage, RMS Voltage, Peak-to-Peak Voltage

Common Conversions:

  • 1 Volt = 1000 Millivolts
  • 1 Volt = 1,000,000 Microvolts
  • 1 Kilovolt = 1000 Volts
  • 1 Megavolt = 1,000,000 Volts
  • 1 Statvolt = 299.792 Volts

How to Use:

  1. Enter the value you want to convert in the input field
  2. Select the unit you're converting from
  3. Select the unit you want to convert to
  4. View the converted result instantly
  5. Use the common conversions for quick reference

Applications:

  • Electronics: Circuit design, component specifications, voltage measurements
  • Power Systems: Transmission lines, distribution networks, voltage levels
  • Battery Technology: Cell voltages, battery pack design, charging systems
  • Medical Equipment: Diagnostic devices, therapeutic equipment, safety standards
  • Research & Development: Laboratory measurements, experimental setups, calibration

Key Concepts:

Electric potential, measured in volts, represents the electrical potential energy per unit charge. It's a fundamental concept in electrical engineering that describes the work needed to move a unit charge from one point to another in an electric field.

Safety Considerations:

When working with high voltages (kilovolts and above), always follow proper safety protocols. Use appropriate personal protective equipment, maintain safe distances, and ensure proper grounding and insulation. Low voltage measurements (millivolts, microvolts) require sensitive equipment and careful handling to avoid interference.
