About custom instructions

ChatGPT custom instructions let every new chat start with context about you and how you want answers formatted. Instead of repeating “be concise” or “I’m a student” each time, you set it once in settings.

This builder uses the same two prompts ChatGPT shows: what to know about you, and how to respond. Presets give you a starting point; merge-if-unchanged keeps your edits when you switch presets unless the text still matched the old template.

Frequently asked questions

Does this call ChatGPT or send my data anywhere?

No. You compose text on your device. Copy and paste into ChatGPT yourself—nothing is sent to our servers or OpenAI.

How is this different from the System Prompt Builder?

This tool matches ChatGPT’s two custom instruction fields exactly. The System Prompt Builder is for fuller system prompts used in APIs or other apps.

Where do I paste these in ChatGPT?

Open ChatGPT → Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions. Paste the first block in “know about you” and the second in “how to respond.”
